Our speaker will be Dr. Lori Walker from The Farm at Rainbow’s End. She will discuss three alpaca health issues (one new and emerging that you must know about) that are important for all alpaca farms:
- Haemonchus Contortus (“barberpole worm”)
Animals dropping weight? Failure to thrive? Stunted growth? Anemic? There is a sneaky, blood-sucking internal parasite, well-known in the southeast but just recently rearing its ugly head as far north as New England. It is very subtle, difficult to diagnose, and tricky to treat.
- Eimeria Macusaniensis (“e-mac”)
As aware as everyone has become of e-mac, there is still a lot of misinformation and confusion out there. One can never learn too much about e-mac!
- “Epe”
Epe is an opportunistic blood parasite that can cause failure to thrive and reproduction issues, among other things.
Diagnosis, treatment, and control of these three parasites will be presented. This presentation is an assimilation of information that I have gathered from some of the best camelid gurus in the world and have consolidated to share with you, the alpaca community.
