5th Annual MAPACA Jubilee
Spin-Off Competition

The 2012 MAPACA Jubilee will again feature our 5th annual Spin-Off Competition, and we would love to build on what has been one of the largest alpaca spin-off competitions in the country the past 4 years. Spin-off competitions help breeders to understand how their breeding decisions affect textile production. By only taking a small amount of fiber (2 oz.) and putting it in a gallon zip lock bag, along with a picture of the alpaca and it’s ARI certificate, our judge will gather a first impression of the fleece, spin it, and place it in a small skein. We will then place it on display at the show along with the alpaca’s picture, ARI Certification and, hopefully, a ribbon. This affords your farm maximum exposure for everyone to see! Your sample will be divided into the same breed, age and color groups as other fleece shows, however, it will be judged as to how the sample spins and presents itself as a yarn.

The fee for each Spin-Off entry is $30.
Deadline for Spin-Off entries: SPIN-OFF REGISTRATION EXTENDED THROUGH FEB. 11th to allow more time for the Cottage fleece competition; all packages must be postmarked by this date.

New for 2012: Cottage Fleece Competition!

MAPACA is offering a NEW way to show your fleeces in 2012. The Cottage Fleece Competition is a way to promote your farm and breeding program as a producer of an excellent product. By combining the score of a spun sample of your alpaca’s fiber with an evaluation of the rest of the alpaca’s fleece by an AOBA Certified Judge, the emphasis will be on the quality of what your alpaca can produce, not the quantity. The total score does not rely heavily on the weight of the fleece (as only five possible points can be gained in that section), but on the overall quality and usability of your fleece in the cottage industry.

“How do I enter a Cottage Fleece?”

• Take a 2 oz. sample from your fleece for the Spin-Off portion of the competition and mail it in for the regular Spin-Off on or before January 25th, 2012. Note: SPIN-OFF REGISTRATION EXTENDED THROUGH FEB. 11th to allow more time for the Cottage fleece competition.
• Prepare (skirt) the rest of the same fleece. Get it ready to either mail in or to drop off during check-in at the Jubilee.
• When judging of your Spin-Off entry is complete, we will use your Spinning Score on the Cottage Fleece Scorecard. The rest of your fleece will then be evaluated and judged at the Jubilee by a certified AOBA Judge for fineness, handle, absence of guard hair, uniformity of micron, length and style.

ANY Spin-Off entry can be eligible for the Cottage Fleece Competition by providing the remainder of your alpaca’s skirted fleece for the competition. All fleeces shown must be within 380 days of its last shearing date. Please refer to Page 68-70 of the 2012 AOBA Show System Handbook for a complete set of rules.

Hint: Look and see what your shear dates were for spring 2011. You MAY be lucky enough to be able to show your 2011 fleeces in the Cottage Fleece Show and your 2012 fleece in the fleece show!
